Have you ever noticed when you browse through travel forums and blogs, there are a lot of negative comments being dished out about bus travel?

They say things like “Bus rides are WAY longer than flights”, “Cheap bus tickets are always gonna be a bad experience”, “There are a lot of bus accidents, so scary!”

Are these statements true? We want to take a good look and discuss some of them in hopes to shine some light on the topic. We think a few of them may be reasonable but some can be considered myths, assumptions that were made up and spread on the internet.

The concern is that these myths may wrongly turn people away from booking a bus ride on their trip, not allowing them to make an unbiased decision. They are not all true and we want to bust these myths!

“Cheap Bus tickets means uncomfortable seats, which will lead to a bad travelling experience!”

Firstly, this myth can already be busted with just the fact that new bus companies have come a long, long way in substantially improving the quality of buses. Sure, not all budget buses out there uphold such standards.

But by booking through well-known bus ticketing companies, you exponentially minimise the risk of a bad travelling experience on a budget bus ride. All the new bus coaches are designed for your comfort and safety since it has become a norm in the industry to do so.

Besides that, bus seats generally have more legroom - even the budget ones. Unlike trains and planes, bus companies are not necessarily trying to maximise the number of passengers on each bus. This means no bumping your knees on the seat in front of you and you can adjust your seat recline as much as you want!

“Travelling by bus is scary, a lot of accidents!”

This is a sensitive topic to discuss as nobody can guarantee that accidents won’t happen. But if you think about it, every mode of travelling has these unfortunate cases happening. It’s a small number of extreme cases, but should you be worried?

There’s no way of totally running away from it BUT by conducting your own due diligence you can make a more calculated step and reduce the risks down to the minimum.

Do your research about the bus company you are booking tickets for, read all the reviews, check the company’s website and check their safety measures. Look for companies that are high in transparency and this will lead you to a company that prioritises the safety of passengers over anything else. Which are a majority of them out there!

“Prices for budget flight tickets and bus tickets are not that different, might as well book a flight”

This is not necessarily true. But we understand the confusion. Well to put it simply, the base price of a flight ticket is usually advertised as being dirt cheap and can seem comparable to bus ticket prices.

But it’s normal for a budget airline to exclude certain charges in the advertised price, including charges for checked-in baggage, airport taxes, extra legroom, in-flight food and beverages etc.

So when comparing the full flight ticket price to the price of a bus ticket with the same destination, that's when the differences come in. You end up coughing up quite a bit more in the end for a flight ticket sometimes, depending on how barebones you can tolerate the flight to be.

This myth? Busted!

“Bus rides are so boring, there’s nothing to do!”

Well, this sounds like a personal problem to us. Is everyone going to have fun on a 6-hour bus ride? That depends on what you bring with you to entertain yourself. Some luxury coaches  have in-bus entertainment and lounge areas like in the KL - Singapore buses. Even for the budget buses there are usually facilities like power outlets and Wi-Fi to keep you busy.

If there is nothing for you on the bus, there is a whole world of beautiful scenery and landscapes to be witnessed right outside the window! Take in the wonders of the countryside.

There are going to be multiple stops too, especially if it’s a long journey, for bathroom breaks and a little sightseeing sometimes. You have a chance to explore minute and undiscovered areas that you’ve never been to and maybe even bump into a hidden gem yourself. Not to mention all the different roadside snacks and drinks!
